Mark Geistweite's Profile      View The Mark Geistweite Gallery

Ansel Adams stated " The negative is comparable to the composer's score and the print to its performance". Just like Adams did in his day, Mark controls the creative process from beginning to end. Most of the images here were taken with the Nikon FM2 and the following lenses: Nikon 20mm, Nikon 28mm, Nikon 50mm and finally rounded out with the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm zoom which Mark refers to as "the best glass in the bag". Currently, Mark has converted to digital for most of his work and medium format for detailed landscapes. His newer cameras are the Pentax K10D digital SLR with a Sigma 17-70mm zoom and a Pentax 6X7 medium format with Fuji Velvia 50 ISO film. Film is scanned using Marks 2-pass scanning process, which results in 2 digital files, one for highlights and one for shadows, and then combined in Photoshop. This results in near perfect reproduction of the original. While no major changes are made in respect to color balance or tonality, Marks efforts are to produce in print what was witnessed at the time of exposure. Mark does not consider himself a purist, often utilizing Photoshop CS2 to perfect his digital files and prints. At the same time, he considers himself a photographer of integrity and would not assemble a landscape of various elements from different images. Each print represents Marks perception of a single scene at the moment the shutter was tripped. The final result is a print rich in contrast, saturation and detail. Prints are available in Moab cotton rag (matte finish), Bull Dog canvas (semi gloss) or Epson luster (semi gloss). Matte finish prints have a softer, more painterly appearance while semi-gloss prints will appear sharper with increased detail and contrast. Sizes range from 8X12 inches to 24X36 inches. All of Marks prints are produced in Marks digital darkroom from an Epson 7800 with K3 ink technology. Epsons proprietary ink technology is rated to give prints a 100 year permanence when displayed behind UV glass. An important note about print sizes. All print sizes offered are at a ratio of 2 to 3, however, because of different cropping requirements, the shorter dimension may vary from the listed option. An example would be a print that appears more panoramic. The print option may be listed as 24X36 but the actual size may be 20X36.
